Some discoveries lead further than space.
Joshua Higgins fixes things on Mars. Showers, filters, lights, the door in the gym that won’t stay shut. He is eighteen months into his rotation and three days from going home when the news from Earth takes away the life he was going back to.
Then, on the wrong side of a line nobody crosses, he finds a stone in the ground where no stone should be.
It is made of no known element. No machine can lift it, and nobody else can move it. In Joshua’s bare hands it comes up as light as any stone, warm, and full of a joy he cannot put down. The marks on its surface are written in every language humanity has ever had, living and dead, and they point to an empty place between Jupiter and Saturn where the stars bend around something no telescope can see.
Within months the world is arguing over what it means. A space corporation wants proof. The Church wants to know whether something long kept is being opened. And Joshua, the one man who can carry it, is sent out into the dark to find out what is waiting there.
A story of science and faith, of what we reach for and what we are given, and of a man who was not looking for anything at all.
